Participating in the Community

RELATED RESOURCES

What It Is

An important component of family quality of life is having opportunities to participate in their communities in ways that families prefer.  Community participation includes three components:

  1. Activities that individuals and families want to participate in,
  2. Barriers they experience,
  3. Supports that are needed to participate in a meaningful way.

For example, social relationships and friendships are key to having a sense of belonging in the community and may require support especially for individuals with disabilities.

Why It Is Important

Individuals with disabilities and their families tell us that they often feel isolated. Since community participation is such an important part of quality of life, it is important to know how to support individuals and families so they can participate in a meaningful way according to their preferences.

What We're Doing

The Beach Center is developing a survey to assist families and programs determine where the barriers are to families being able to participate in their communities.  We are also looking for ways to support families so they can participate more fully in their communities.

Social Interaction Barriers and How They May Be Overcome
